Wire Thread Insert, abbreviated as thread insert, is a new type of internal thread fastener. It is wound from high-strength, high-precision, corrosion-resistant steel wire with a diamond-shaped cross-section and smooth surface. It looks like a spring and features an installation tang at one end. Using special tools, the insert is screwed into a pre-machined threaded hole via the tang. The outer surface of the insert clings tightly to the hole wall by elastic force, while its inner surface forms a brand-new standard thread for screws and bolts. This prevents direct contact between fasteners and the base material, protecting both the substrate and screws. When applied to low-strength base materials such as aluminum and magnesium alloys, it significantly boosts thread tensile strength and wear resistance. It also optimizes thread stress distribution to share load evenly across the whole thread, improving the overall connection strength. Besides, it can repair worn or damaged internal threaded holes.

Features

Wire thread inserts are precision concentric assemblies of internal and external threads. Their outer diameter in the free state is slightly larger than the mounting thread diameter. After installation, they lock firmly inside the threaded hole to form high-precision internal threads that meet international standards, outperforming directly tapped threads in all performance indicators.

The insert creates a spring-loaded connection between the screw and mounting hole, eliminating pitch and thread profile errors between internal and external threads. Load is evenly distributed on every thread turn with vibration damping performance, reinforcing the internal thread and raising the load capacity and fatigue resistance of threaded joints.

Made of high-strength, smooth steel wire, the insert reduces friction and abrasion with screws, cutting friction torque on fasteners by up to 90%. Maximum preload and screw tension can be achieved with minimal tightening torque to guard against screw loosening. Meanwhile, under the same strength requirement as ordinary internal threads, inserts greatly enhance threaded hole strength, saving material and reducing component weight and size.

When threads are machined incorrectly or internal threads get damaged, the conventional solution is to enlarge threads and matching screws. Using wire thread inserts for restoration quickly restores threads to their original dimensions without increasing weight or volume, salvaging key equipment components. In addition, repairing equipment with scarce imperial threaded holes is troublesome; wire thread inserts enable fast conversion between imperial and metric thread standards.

Manufactured from heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant premium steel, wire thread inserts avoid common thread failures such as seizure, galling and rust lock-up in threaded connections.
